The City of Edmonton is making a billion dollar decision about the future of food in our city. We think they should take the time and gather the appropriate information before they make a decision that will cost citizens now and in the future. What do you think?

Edmonton’s City Council seems poised to approve a plan that preserves virtually none of the prime farmland in northeast Edmonton. The proposed Horse Hill Area Structure Plan (ASP), slated for Public Hearing on February 25 and 26, 2013,(1:30 to 9:30 both days) would convert almost all remaining farmland to residential and retail development.

Other municipalities have successfully implemented alternate solutions to “business-as-usual sprawl”. Our City could choose to embrace such policies, and simultaneously reduce sprawl and preserve farmland. Instead, the current choice is to not even gather good, integrated information to show us the trade-offs between different decisions.

We believe that Councillors need information and time to make decisions about this valuable and irreplaceable natural resource.

We know that there are skilled consultants the City could engage to use state-of-the-art methodologies, such as Multi-criteria Analysis, Total Cost Assessment, or Full Cost Accounting, to provide this information in a timely manner. They need to hear immediately from taxpayers so we can have a thoughtful, fair examination of all the options. Sign this petition to tell City Council that: before they make land use decisions in Northeast Edmonton that citizens want them to gather the full information.

  • Plan to attend the Public Hearing on February 25 and 26 (1:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.) at City Hall
  • Talk with your neighbours, friends and colleagues about this issue. Ask them to sign the petition, come to the Public Hearing and/or call or write their Councillor.

“Trying not to cry about the thought of losing my farm, it is really starting to hit home now. I’m just gunna put it out there: please sign the petition, and come out to the public hearing on FEB. 25 & 26″ -Janelle Herbert, local farmer
